First page: what sermorelin is
Sermorelin is not growth hormone. It sends a signal to a small gland under the brain that can release growth hormone.
The pitch says “natural hormone support”
That phrase skips the useful part. Sermorelin copies one part of a natural signal. It is not a broad promise about energy, sleep, shape or ageing.
The basic map
A signal, not the hormone itself
The pituitary is a small gland below the brain. Sermorelin asks that gland to release growth hormone. A gland that cannot respond will not be fixed by a louder signal.
Sermorelin is a lab-made copy of the first 29 building blocks in the body’s growth-hormone-releasing signal.

The FDA has said that this kind of signal will not work when the body can make no growth hormone at all.

Then and now
The old approval was narrow
Past approval matters because it shows sermorelin was once a real prescription medicine, checked by the FDA for two narrow uses. It does not approve the adult wellness claims seen now.
Sermorelin was approved in December 1990 for a hormone test and in September 1997 for certain children who were not growing because of a growth hormone shortage.

As of September 2026, sermorelin had never been FDA-approved for adults.

Both Geref approvals ended on June 18, 2009, after the maker stopped marketing the products and asked for withdrawal.

In March 2013, the FDA stated that safety and effectiveness were not the reasons Geref left the market.

Two separate facts. Why it left: its maker stopped selling it, and the FDA found it was not pulled for being unsafe. Where it stands now: as of September 2026, no approved sermorelin product was on sale.
