Red-flag notes: know when to pause

A single unclear detail may have a simple answer. A stack of missing details is a reason to stop and verify before paying.

The checkout comes before the clinical conversation

Slow the process down. A prescription product needs a real prescriber, a real assessment and a pharmacy that can be checked.

Hard stops

Do not let labels do the thinking

  • No prescription is required.
  • The product says research use while the page promises human effects.
  • The only assessment is a fixed form.
  • The pharmacy is not named.
  • A compounded product is called FDA-approved.
  • A listing number such as an NDC is used as proof of approval.

Verify

Use records, not badges

Get the exact clinician and pharmacy names. Search the relevant state boards. If the label names an outsourcing facility, the larger plant that the FDA registers and inspects, search the FDA’s list of those plants as well.

A state pharmacy licence record is the basic check for the pharmacy named on the label.

An FDA warning letter records what the FDA said was wrong when it was sent; it is not a court ruling, and the company may have fixed the problem since, so treat it as a reason to ask questions.

A fixed questionnaire with no useful follow-up is not a proper medical assessment under medical board guidance.

Leave with four things written down

  • The clinician.
  • The clinician’s state board.
  • The pharmacy.
  • The exact medicine on the label.
